Case Studies

Pick an Industry:

Telecom Case Study: Mobile Phone Packages (Tariffs) in Cyprus

We were asked by KKTCELL, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) branch of Turkish telecom giant Turkcell, to investigate customers' opinions on their mobile packages (tariffs). We searched social media and other websites, such as an official complaints page, and extracted customers' views on KKTCELL's packages and on KKTCELL in general. We fed this data our algorithm to reveal popular topics of discussion around mobile packages amongst KKTCELL customers.

Opportunity:
The features included in packages (e.g., SMS, data, minutes) can be advertised more prominently or reconfigured according to patterns of usage. This would help ease consumers' concerns about being unfairly charged or paying for unused features.

Opportunity:
There seem to be a significant portion of refund/cancellation requests, and customers are wishing that matters are address promptly. Therefore, Refund and customer service channels can be improved. By using an AI chatbot, faster and more satisfactory service can be provided to customers, gaining an advantage over competitor companies.

We were also asked to investigate how KKTCELL can gain a competitive advantage over its main competitor, Telsim, in the current (March 2025) price war. Hence, we ran the same analysis for Telsim, to gain an insight on what their customers are saying, to offer KKTCELL more knowledge and therefore, help them navigate the situation. For context: KKTCELL and Telsim dominate the TRNC telecom market, with KKTCELL having the larger market share.

What can KKTCELL do?KKTCELL's advertising campaigns can emphasize that unused services will not be charged, or that any unfair charges will be promptly refunded. Since Telsim customers complain about this, this might attract their attention, while helping retain KKTCELL's existing customers.Suggested price war strategy:
Quality > Price
KKTCELL can gain a competitive advantage by offering high-quality packages and services tailored to customer needs instead of lowering prices. Research shows that customers frequently request refunds and complain about paying for unused services. Therefore, KKTCELL can rely on its larger market share and offer a better quality service, while also addressing Telsim's customers' issues, and keep the same prices.

Electric Cars Case Study: The Rise of BYD Electric Cars in the UK

We wanted to investigate why Chinese electric cars are taking over the UK market and outperforming Tesla. We analysed the top 50 most popular YouTube videos and top 20 comments from each (~1000 people) to uncover the popular topics around BYD and how people feel about them.

Opportunity for EV makers:

When advertising EVs in the UK market, emphasizing battery, interiors and quality can target UK consumers more effectively, potentially increasing market share.

Opportunities for EV makers:

Position your company as friendly to the UK, to reassure against concerns over national security.Emphasize that EV purchases will be subsidized through means such as marketing campaigns, in-store price tags, and brand websites.

Political / Econ. Case Study: Tariffs Imposed by Trump, 2025

Understanding the president’s constituency means understanding the president. We searched the “AskTrumpSupporters” Reddit Community (95,000+ members) for the keyword “tariff” and extracted the top 100 posts and their comments (~9500 comments). Next, we put this data into our algorithm to reveal popular topics of discussion around tariffs amongst Trump supporters.

Opportunity for Canadian policymakers:

Run a media campaign targeting Trump supporters, that emphasises measures taken against drug trafficking.

Potential risks:Supply chain delays, rise in production costs, decrease in profit margins.Value:Had policymakers used these insights, they could have adjusted messaging to shift public perception before tariffs were imposed.

Counter-Terrorism Case Study: Predicting ISIS Targeting Through Linguistic Analysis of Al-Naba Newsletter

Brainbridge collaborated with researchers to analyze the predictive power of ISIS’s public newsletter, Al-Naba, in identifying potential targets of terrorist attacks between 2015 and 2019.

A total of 316 issues of Al-Naba, from October 2015 to September 2021, were analyzed using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning techniques (all of which is now at Brainbridge's disposal).
The analysis revealed prominent topics in the newsletter issues and calculated the topics' correlations with actual ISIS attacks that happened. Some of the prominent topics were grouped into "Threats to Local Groups", "Unreachable Enemies" and "Religious Topics" in the graph below.

What does this graph say?The graph categorizes revealed topics into 3 classes: threats to local groups, unreachable enemies and religious topics (x axis). The y axis indicates the correlation of these topics to actual ISIS attacks, as a percentage, where 100% indicated perfect correlation. The graph indicates that while "Unreachable Enemies" and "Religious Topics" were negatively correlated with attacks, "Threats to Local Groups" were positively correlated with actual attacks.Main Findings:
> Analysis of text in Al-Naba about reachable groups (e.g., Alawites, Shias, Kurds) strongly predicted ISIS attacks, including correlations above 80%.
> Analysis of text regarding religious or distant enemies (e.g., Western nations) showed little to no link to attacks.

Diving deeper into what these topics were, and their meaning in the context of this study, revealed valuable insights into the motive behind ISIS attacks. The graph below lists some of the topics listed under each group.

Main Findings:> Threats to local groups, which comprises use of words indicating threat with Christians, Shias, Kurds (and more) are most highly and positively correlated with actual ISIS attacks.> Topics concerning religion and unreachable enemies indicate negative and less significant correlation with ISIS attacks.> This indicates that fear, not hatred or religion, drives ISIS targeting. This can offer actionable insights for security strategies.

Opportunities and Implications:
> Brainbridge’s NLP-driven approach enables governments to proactively identify and mitigate terrorist threats by analyzing public texts, enhancing security without invasive methods.
> Businesses operating in high-risk regions can leverage these insights to assess risks, protect assets, and ensure employee safety through data-driven threat forecasting.
> NGOs can use Brainbridge’s predictive analytics to support conflict prevention and humanitarian efforts, targeting interventions where threats are most likely to emerge.
This case study demonstrates Brainbridge’s capability to apply advanced NLP and machine learning techniques to analyze complex textual data, providing actionable insights for governments and security agencies to anticipate and mitigate terrorist threats effectively.
